Essential Plastics Necessary For Environmental Research And Development

According to a recent report on plastics and sustainable development: environmental benefits, cost estimates and continuous improvement opportunities, the environmental cost of using plastics in consumer goods and packaging is 4 times times lower than the environmental cost of other alternative materials.


The report, published by Trucost, a global leader in natural capital valuation, was supported by the American Chemical Commission to study the typical elements of unconventional financial accounting based on natural capital accounting methods, including measuring and assessing environmental impacts, such as water consumption and emissions in air, land and water. The report shows that replacing consumer goods and plastic packaging with alternative materials that provide the same functionality will increase the cost of the environment from $139 billion a year to $533 billion.


This is because rugged, lightweight plastics help us do more with less material, which provides environmental benefits throughout the life cycle of plastic products and packaging. The study concludes that while glass, tin, aluminum and paper are viable substitutes for plastics in many consumer products, in most cases their ton production environment costs may be lower than that of plastics, but are generally higher because of the need for additional materials to achieve the same purpose as plastics. For example, a typical plastic soft drink bottle in the United States contains 30 grams of plastic.


However, if the equivalent capacity bottle substitution material is replaced by the weighted average combination of the substitute materials currently used in the market, such as glass, tin and so on need 3-4 times of consumption. Consumer plastic products and packaging in 2015 the social environment costs more than 139 billion U.S. dollars, equivalent to nearly 20% of the plastic manufacturing sector revenue, if the current trend continues, by 2025, it is expected to increase to 209 billion U.S. dollars. This includes costs to society due to the effects of greenhouse gas emissions: air pollution, land and water pollution, water consumption, marine impacts and other costs arising from the entire plastic value chain.


These external costs reflect the future risks of the profitability of the plastics industry. This study, as a groundbreaking assessment of plastics, focuses on the use of plastics to make consumer goods more sustainable by comparing the relative environmental properties of plastics, and by studying possible strategic interventions through key leverage points in the plastic value chain to bring net environmental benefits. The authors suggest measures to help further reduce the overall environmental costs of plastics, such as by increasing the use of low-carbon electricity in plastic production, using low-emission transport models, developing more efficient plastic packaging, and increasing recycling and energy-converted plastics to help curb marine litter and conserve resources. In addition, by increasing regulation to optimize business costs (e.g., carbon emissions), promote the action of plastics-related customers and communities, and reduce external environmental costs. At the same time to enhance the plastic industry and consumer goods industry action, linkage between government, non-governmental organizations and consumers to address the environmental costs of plastics.
